I have searched and i cant seem to find the info im looking for. Mixed reviews on being a real bitch or easy. I got the part, popped the hood and took a peek. My question is how the **** do i get to it? Im fairly confident on putting the synchro in but how much do i need to unbolt to get to it? There is no way that this is as easy as i have heard. I can barely even see it let alone check the orientation of the way its positioned. Are there any writeups to do the full replacement that have more than just how to orientate the gear? Do i take the upper intake or lower or both off? I can see the coil pack some of the harness and the intake being in the way. Also i bought the tool to set the gear degrees. This parts looks like a drop in. Do i really need to mess with all the tdc and rotating the engine ten times? I have heard to pull the sensor put the tool in and have a buddy spin the engine till the tool drops completely in place. Is that all? Or is that wrong? I really need to change this piece and i am looking for all the help i can get. Im on a tight timeschedule with work and there is no way i can leave it at a shop. Even if i have to do it at night after work i will. Just looking for the right info to get the job done. Thank you for any help.

The cam sensor is like a distributor, so yes you must put it back in exactly as it came out.
Image how it would be if you just dropped a distributor in, probably wouldn't work out to well, lol, same for the cam syncronizer.

It comes out just like a distributor as well, there is a bolt and washer that clamps it down once timing is set, remove this bolt and cam syncro will come out just like a distributor.

As said in the above link the cam syncro also runs the oil pump, just like a distributor :)

On my 5.0 I just line up the 0° timing mark with the pointer. If the tool won't go on the synchronizer, turn it another full turn as the cam is 180° out, line the zero mark back up with the pointer. Pull out the old synchronizer, drop in the new one, twisting a bit till it drops down, tighten the bolt, then reinstall the camshaft position sensor.

Make sure it is on TDC after the compression stoke. It is very important, and must be done right.

As for how to get to it, nobody knows. You didn't tell us what engine you have.

How much has to come off to access the synchro?

for the cam syncro I suggest using a factory only part. I had an issue with an aftermarket setting a check engine light even tho it was set in correctly with the tool. The aftermarket one seemed to be machined a little off and I had to pull the lower intake to get it back out of the block. It was only about 40 more for the motor craft part.

The ford part is discontinued. I called 3 dealers and all of them gave me the same info. I ordered the part from rock auto. Just wondering what other have done.
