replacing shocks. drilling???

I am replacing the shocks on my 02 ranger. I am replacing the OE shocks with CarQuest KYB Gas shocks. This is the first time I have done this and was under the impression you just unbolt the old ones and bolt the new ones on. Well, I took one of the shocks out of the box and there was a paper in the box, no instructions, just pictures. In the pictures it has measurements on where to drill holes in the shock absorber, compress it and drain some fluid out. Am I supposed to drill holes in these socks??? Can someone help. I am a broke, trying to learn how to do it your-selfer.

Are you sure they aren't showing to put holes in the shock boots so water can drain?

you shouldnt have to drill holes in anything. the only thing i can think of is that they are trying to make it easier to take the old ones off but i wouldnt drill anything

edit: they arent shock rebuild instructions are they? any chance you can post a pic?

These are almost certainly DISPOSAL instructions.

You don't want to crush, incinerate, or whatever, a high pressure cannister. You drill the hole to bleed the pressure off prior to throwing them in the garbage.

I think you're right MAKG. I had a feeling this was what it was for. I was just looking for a second on that thought.

Don't put a Hydro shock on upside down either, it'll act just like you put NO shock on the truck. Don't ask me how I know lol

Yes, KYB has the disposal instructions on the installation sheet. Drilling and draining the old shocks is the proper disposal method.
