My '88 Ranger 2.9 is bleeding like a stuck pig! A 5spd with an electric transfer case. How big a job is it to get to the rear main to replace the seal? Any special tools needed? And any little things to avoid so the job doesn't turn into a nightmare? Thanks for any advice.

Just changed trans in my sons 90. Did clutch while in there. Did not do main seal. Thought about it but it wasn't leaking and I was running out of time. The biggest pita is removing the exhaust so you can remove transmission. Don't know if you will have to with yours or not. If I had another 1/8th of an inch I think I could have avoided it.

The transmission and any other components in the way need to be removed. Then it's pretty simple after that. That's why shops charge so much to do it.

Lots of people beat the body seam over with a nice size hammer, and they only have to remove the exhaust once!

And actually, its not the getting the trans out that requires reomving the exhaust, that can be done with a pry bar...its the getting it back in!
