I like to see my rpms as I'm driving, esp uphill, in town, towing, etc, so I know what rpm the engine is at in relation to it's torque peak and so I don't over rev or lug it, etc.
The 93 I bought recently just had the standard gauge panel, no tach. Also the temp gauge didn't work anyway, the speedo bounced up and down at road speed, and only 3 of the gauge cluster bulbs worked.
Found the optional gauge panel out of a 5 spd truck so no PRNDL indicator for an auto in the bottom of the panel.
92k on the speedo, mine had near 80, so close enuf.
Got it in yesterday, and at least most of the stuff appears to work, even!
Haven't taken it out and driven it, but the tach and oil pressure and amps and fuel gauges work.
Ford sure does like to make things that should be simple more difficult, tho.
The trim cover comes off easily, and the gauge panel comes out with just 4 screws that are easy to get to.
But getting it out of the dash is another story! The 4 way flasher switch is in the worst possible place and gets right in the way. What should have taken less than 5 minutes took over an hour to wriggle the panel out far enuf to disconnect the 2 wire connectors and the speedo, and then get it out of the dash just because of that darn switch. At least the wire connectors and speedo cable came off easily - once I figured the release out on the speedo (thanks to my oem shop manual).
Now to put bulbs in for whatever else takes them before I put the trim cover back on - I've got no lights anywhere else like for the heater control and other stuff. I've never seen a vehicle so neglected. Soooo many things not maintained, but I'm getting there. New trans New Year's weekend. Then to finish figuring out the miss under load in 4th & 5th and then most everything will finally work like it should!
But my TACH WORKS !
