Hi, I replaced my crankshaft position sensor with a authentic motorcraft new one. But the truck would not start. So I put the old one back on and it starts right up. What could be wrong or what am I doing wrong.

What engine do you have? We would like to move your thread to a more appropriate forum. This particular area is for 2019 and newer Rangers and you claim to have a 2004.

If it's not broke, why are you fixing it?

Yes it's a 2004 ford ranger Edge 3.0L gas with the U vin #

Thread moved to the 3.0 Liter engine forum. Welcome to the forum Allissa Gresham.

New crank sensor is bad or installation was, it happens

Intermittent no start wouldn't be crank sensor, for sure, 100%

What codes are there in the computers memory?
If none then not crank sensor or cam sensor

Does the Theft light(padlock) ever flash rapidly when there is a no start?

If engine cranks, starter motor works, when there is a no start then usual issue is fuel, pump is intermittent

Don't believe there is a code for the Crank Sensor, on a 2004. Yes, there is codes for the Cam Sensor. Always replace the Crankshaft sensor Electrical plug, with pigtails, when replacing the crank sensor--Had so many of these pigtail connectors, cause intermittent issue, couldn't begin to count them. Never a code, cause it doesn't exist!

Do you have a tachometer?? One trick I used back in the day, was observe, during engine crank/no start, if the tachometer needle, showed crank speed/200-300rpm movement--usually means PCM/Engine computer was receiving Crank Shaft Sensor signal. Hope this helps.:)
