I have a 1994 Ranger extended cab 4x4 I need to replace the motor, it has a 3.0 in now, do I have to replace it with a 3.0 or will a 4.0 work, I know where I can find a motor from a 2001 ranger 3.0 will it work or does it need to be earlier model Need Help

4.0l would require new transmission, wiring harness and computer, and 4.0l only has 15 more horse power so not a big change for the hassle.

Another 3.0l would be best swap.

Yes, 2001 3.0l block and heads can be used, you would swap your current intake, distributor('94?), and valve covers to the newer engine.
That way fuel system, ignition and sensors would be the same, not sure on the oil pan.

I would change rear main seal on newer engine.
