Is the 5/16 retaining bolt near the wheel end or inside the Diff? I was doing this by flashlight at 10PM last night, so I may have missed the 5/16 bolt. I'll take a look this afternoon.
It is located in the differential, follow the center pin until you see it in the casting that houses the spiders and what not. It is covered in lock tite from the factory, and have a particular reputation for being a pita. I have never had a problem with them though. Make sure to re lock tite it on installation, that thing coming loose in motion would certainly be bad news.
I have had one break before. I won't tell you how I got it out.....I will tell you that it wasn't fun to do. Luckily I have spares laying around and replaced it. But definately put BLUE lock tite on it when you reinstall it. Some places say you have to replace the retaining bolt but look at it, if it appears ok then reinsatll it and if it is iffy replace it. They don't cost that much.
