Removing key scratches - any success stories?

So some upstanding citizen keyed my black 08 ranger. I just noticed the scratches today... :bawling:

I got some McGuire's (sp?) Scratch X and it was ok for the very fine scratches at the ends of the large gashes, but for the big ones, it was ineffective.

Does anyone know of a good scratch remover specifically for the big ones? I am looking at the Quixx one and will probably pick that one up.

If it's impossible I will just get them professionally taken care of, but I would prefer to handle this on my own...

Any advice and directions would be greatly appreciated, guys!
 
go to the ford dealership for fourteen dollars buy a bottle of touch up paint. after one or two coats let it dry and buff it. You will never tell that it was even there

Cool dude, thanks. That is certainly an option... I'm little wary of using paint, as I lack the proper skills and the finish I have right now is really stellar.
 
Are any of them through the paint? If it is then paint is the only fix. If not I've had decent results with Scratch Doctor. I also have a box of Quixx but haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but it looks like a very solid system. If all else fails take it to a body shop and find out how much it would be to buff the area.
 
a bad ass buff job. If that dont do the trick, paint is your only option.
 
If it's through the paint you won't buff it out. If your fingernail can catch the scratch, it's probably through the paint. Try wet sanding with 1500 grit, then use 3M coarse rubbing compound with the corresponding buffing pad. Follow that up with fine cut rubbing compound also with the corresponding pad. Make sure you keep the buffer under 1500 rpm while using the rubbing compounds. Then glaze with a nice soft wool pad, at full speed if you want. Then wax with whatever you like.
 
unless your using alot of glaze which isnt recommended you' will never cut the clear to get the shine........i always go around 750 rpms with a moderate amout of glaze...if u go 1500 rpms...watch what your doin you can burn through very easy! since you just color sanded the clear..if thats the route your going... factory paint jobs are only about .6 mils thick...not much at all!!
 
like jason said, if your fingernail catches on the scratch, the only thing you can do is touch up paint. if it doesnt catch you may be able to buff it out.

If it's a long scratch, there may be some areas that aren't too deep, and others that are. It wouldn't hurt to wetsand and buff it like said already, it may reduce it's visibility a bit. Also, if you touch it up, use a damn well pen... I can't stand people who use the brush thing that comes with the touchup bottles, it leaves a huge excessive smear of paint that goes waaay outside the scratch, not to mention it looks like shit.
