I discovered a coolant leak (at only 82K) and at first assumed it was the water pump (WP) gasket. Now after the WP has been removed it is possible the leak is the front cover (FC) gasket. I do not want to do all the work on the WP then find it has to be redone to fix the FC gasket.

Looking at the FSM instruction on the FC it says "remove the oil pan". There are a couple of bolts that join the FC to the pan and it appears that I can just remove those bolts - he says with hope.

Can someone who has done this confirm that I indeed have to remove the oil pan to access the FC. Which would mean pulling the engine - Ford's better idea.

No, you can just take those few bolts out that go into the front cover. Just remember the sealant on the corners where they come together.

I like how you say "only 82K miles" like that isn't enough to have a leak. 82K miles is a pretty good time to expect to have at least one leak.

Great, thanks adsm.

Well my comparison is my Montero with original WP and zero coolant leaks at 182K, my 95 Camry at 226k with no leaks yet and an 88 Mazda truck that went over 230K with no leaks and original heads never removed.
