I've been reading the A4ld tips from people on the site. Sounds like the YPipe needs to go to get it out?

One thing I've learned to make access easier on the bell housing to engine bolts. Remove your engine mount nuts. Lift the engine up. Remove the block brackets that fit to the mounts. Three bolts on each bracket. Takes a few minutes. Then you can lower your engine down an extra 4 inches or so. Makes getting to the back bell housing bolts so much easier.

Not sure when I'm going to start working on the A4ld removal. Will start soaking the Y pipe in pb blaster.

I replaced my A4Ld without taking the Y pipe down. Just removed the bolts--and took the transfer case off and then wiggled the trans till it fell out. Getting the M5OD back in was not very difficult even with the Y pipe in place. Might save you some hassle to try it that way.

BTW for the top bolts on the trans to engine, I just reach over the top of the engine with a ratcheting box wrench--worked okay for me. Just the top 2.

if you cant remove those bolts with a racheting wrench take the floor shifter plate out and use a long extension.

I just took mine out, the hardest part was getting the little connector on the transmission/transfer case shift linkage apart. I did not have to take out the Y pipe, just wiggle it alot.

Pulled the pan today. Bottom of pan was dirty. Had some gold flecks in it. Is it shot? Time for a new one?

some metal shavings in the a4ld is normal.. notice I didn't say good or alright, but it is normal.

I didn't have any issues removing my a4ld with just basic tools and not doing anything to motor mounts, y-pipe, or anything.

I found more than shavings when I was cleaning out the drip pan. There's full on metal pieces not just gold flecks. I was thinking of trying to throw some fluid in and test it out before I started yanking the trans. Now I think I'd be better off just yanking the thing out and not wasting money on new fluid and a filter.

You don't have to remove the Y-pipe, it just makes getting the trans in and out easier. To get to the top bolts I always use a long (3-4 ft) extension and a "wobbly" socket, I can lay at the back of the trans and reach them no problem. I never take the motor mounts loose or anything.
