There is an oil leak from the valve covers so I'd like to replace the gasket. I've tried to find some instructions/directions to do so on the internet but haven't been successful. Has anyone removed the covers in order to replace the gasket?

:taunt: That's a good one! I think it is a little more complicated than that!

I did this job a few months ago. In order to get to all the bolts on the valve covers, you have to pull off the upper intake manifold. It's a full day job. I went ahead and pulled the lower intake manifold off while I was in there and replaced all the manifold gaskets as well. I was loosing coolant at the lower intake manifold. The new gasket solved that problem.

Here's a link I used for doing this job:

The instructions as given in that link talk about removing the EGR valve as part of this job. That was a little confusing to me because my truck has no EGR valve. I guess some do and some don't?

Just noticed from your profile that your Ranger is an '03. The link I gave in my previous posting is for the OHV 4.0 like my '99. I have no idea if those instructions will apply to your SOHC 4.0.

Go to any parts store and buy a Haynes or Chiltons repair manual for your truck. It will have detailed instructions on how to change the valve cover gaskets.

Thanks WA2BE! Actually I have a 2001 Ranger. I must have been thinking of my wife's Liberty! I'll check out the link. I appreciate it!
