remove trans and leaving tcase in the truck?

is it possible?

i have the motor out of my 79 bronco, and its a bitch to put back in and line everything up with the trans still attached in the truck. so can i unbolt the trans from the crossmember, unbolt it from the tcase, and let the tcase sit on the skid plate and just slide the trans ahead 6 or 7"?

Don't bother with that.

With a hoist on the engine, and a floor jack under the tranny, you have PLENTY of room to line up the engine and tranny. If you're REALLY concerned, 6-8" of allthread on two of the boltholes makes life easier as well

i have the motor hanging from a chain hoist on the roof and i have a jack under the tranny but its damn hard to line up the torque converter on the trans with the flex plate on the motor. and the exhaust manifolds keep getting in the way and hitting the motor mounts. its a pita

What is that, a 351? You don't need a chain hoist for anything that small. Just get in there and man-handle that bitch. Punch its valve covers in and then bite it on the EGR valve.

+1 by doing it you would be good at doing it afterwords. it can be done both ways but i would rather just do what will said too

Would it be easier to remove the exhaust manifolds, put the motor in and replace the manifolds? Or remove the mounts, get eveything bolted up, raise the engine a little and put them back in?

no i tried 1 bolt on each side of the exhaust manifolds and both twisted off. i dont wanna twist em all of, thats too big of a pain

You wont get it done talking to us, this is one of the few instances I have to say get off the webz and get out there and start putting it in, just figure something out. And when your done you will have alot better idea of what you did and be able to advise someone else. But again it dont get done on a keyboard.
