This will be the first time I will be doing any major work with a transmission. My transmission is completely shot. I have a new one that I am going to install. The truck is a 98 2x4 4 cyl. Is there any tips or tricks or just basic things I should know to make this as easy and as painless as possible. I do not have access to a transmission jack.

Thanks,
Tom

If you can get a hold of one, get a transmission jack.

Taking it out is pretty straight forward. Starter, torque converter nuts, drive shaft, exhaust, mount, bell bolts.

When putting it back together, make sure that the torque converter is seated in completely. It should clunk down three times. You will need to spin it back and forth while rocking it up and down and pushing in (sounds complicated, it really isn't). The first two will be easy, the last one is usually the hardest.

If it won't go in and you aren't sure, measure the distance from the back of the flex plate (not the ring of teeth around it, but the plate itself) to the back of the block. Then measure the distance from the front of the trans case to the base of the converter studs. Should be about the same.

got it out tonight. took about 4 hours. the top 2 bolts were a pita. Im gonna end up putting it back in friday. if any one else has suggestions id appreciate it.

Hey, I saw your last post was on the 7th. Did everything go okay for the reinstall?

I'm taking mine out as well, well really I'm just backing it up so I can put my rebuilt block in after taking the blown one out. The torque converter poses a question for me though. How does one disconnect the torque converter with the bell housing still attached? I though it would just come out with the trans but I suppose not if I am understanding things correctly..

Old thread.

But to answer your question, remove starter and rotate motor so you can get the 4 nuts off the TC through the starter hole.

Are there any tips/tricks for putting the tranny bolts back in? I am currently half way through changing out my rear main seal. Any help would be appreciated.
