ok so i F'ed over on this 4.0 and the timing chain tensor is toasted... i need to get the front cover off but i cant get the fan off... how do you do it?
also is there a alum or after market intake set up that would replace the plastic part on the intake after the butterfly...

on either the 4.0OHV or 4.0SOHC engine I generally remove the fan
before removing the accessory belt.

there's a two "wrench" tool set that is supposed to remove the fans
One acts like a big wrench that goes over the four bolts
that hold the water pump pulley to the water pump hub
The other tool actually goes on the hex of the clutch shaft
where it screws onto the water pump.

I've never had success with that tool... so much so that I gave it away.

what I use is a BIG (36mm or 1-7/16") wrench toat goes on the clutch shaft
hex and I give it a healthy wack with a 3lb hammer.

Sometimes it takes more than one shot to convince it I'm serious...
It has never taken more than five shots.

My brother's prefered method is to put a pointy punch tip in an air chesel and use it against the clutch flats. It seems effective.

What Allan said and make sure you're turning it the correct way.

I use the 1 7/16 wrench might have to take out a couple pulley bolts for it to fit on there then I put a strap wrench on the pulley works pretty good.Mine has the direction to turn on the shroud, a lot of left hand nuts have that slot in them to indicate left hand thread

4.0's are Right hand thread.

2.9 is left hand thread

Not that this is strictly relevant, but I almost (but not quite)
miss the 2.9 engine... it was easier for me to get a good "swing"
with the hammer at the wrench on a 2.9 (smacking the wrench
towards the drivers side than it is to hit it towards the passenger
side on a 4.0

Does the 4.0 fan rotate in the opposite direction when driven by the engine compared to the 2.9?

I have had ok success with the 2 wrench set though I only use the big wrench it came with on the four bolts and use a 1 7/16" combination wrench on the fan clutch. First time I did removed it took me like 1 hr now I can take it off in like 8 minuets tops.

can you post a pic of where your puttin wrinches so i know for sure that your talkin about... i saw the 4 bolts on the back and i was gonna take them out but i thought it would a smart idea to check first...

Seems like the last time I had to pull one on the truck, I ended up using a sawsall... I hate those things.
