i am looking for a write up on how to install a remote starter/keyless entry into an 03 ranger. i'm looking for a list of all the wires i need to hack into, the colors, what harness their connected to, where the harness is located, maybe pictures, any modules i need and how and where to install it, and any special notes/tips.

i've never tried installing one before so the more information the better

The manufacturer of the remote start you purchase will come with a website that will have wiring instructions for you make and model.

your trying to tell me that there is enough information in the book the starter comes with? for wire colors maybe, locations i doubt it, hints and tips for specific vehicles and what bypass modules you need, no way

In the book or on the box there will be a website for the company listed. If you go to there site you should fine wiring diagrams for you vehicle listed on it. The book that the starter comes with will list what each wire on the modules harness will need to be wired into, the sheet you print off their website will show what wire colors and locations you are looking for in your truck. Match the 2 up. Your truck should have passive anti theft, so you will need a PATS module, either the ford one or an aftermarket one that is listed for you application will work.

If you can't find the wiring diagram you need on the company's website, I can get you the diagram for the ford remote start, you can just cross it over to yours, if its not a ford remote start. I'm a ford technician and install these every now and then so i've got access to the online install manuals.

does anyone have a remote start installed on a 2.9? what brand?

You can use pretty much any brand you wish, they aren't vehicle or engine specific.

You can get all the info here, complete with color pictures:

www.bulldogsecurity.com

BTW - I was gonna do it myself on my 03 as well, but after looking at all the wiring, setting up the PATS bypass module, etc etc...., opted to pay the guy $100 to do it and it came with a lifetime warrenty on parts AND labor.

Bulldog makes pretty good stuff.
go to the website and look up your truck,do a dry run and see if you can find the wires before you order the setup.

Just had one installed into an 03 Ranger last week ,which I recently purchased. This is the fourth one that I have had put into vehicles that I have had (2004 Ranger,2000 Taurus, 2006 Odyssey Van.) Best advice is unless you are extremely proficient at dealing with electrical issues, hire it done. What I have found is that by the time you buy the starting unit and the PATS box for the extra key, you will have almost as much money in it as if you have someone do it. I had a Prestige (Audiovox) installed in all the above vehicles (which is a good unit.) Paid $180 out the door parts and labor with a lifetime guarantee (including the PATS box which is an extra $30.)
Guy I had do it is extremely proficient at it (does an average of 5 or 6 a week) and even he had trouble installing it. I've learned some things just aren't worth messing with yourself, and this is one of them.

IMHO, if you're not completely comfortable with wiring something up, then leave it alone and find someone who is. I've spent WAAAAAYYYY too much time correcting hacked-up wiring in trucks an cars. Most of those places that offer alarms and remote starters provide plenty of wiring info and help for anyone with passing knowledge of electrical systems to install it, from what I've seen.

It also is apparently good enough for people with less than that to attempt to install... I bought an 89 Bronco II Eddie Bauer that had a myriad of quirks and issues. When I tore open the dash one fine day I discovered part of the reason why... someone had put in a remote starter and had cut large chunks of insulation off a ton of different wires trying to find what needed to be plugged to what. Then they left all of the bare wires just hanging there, which would short out at random times causing random issues. Thankfully I know how to repair such a disaster...

And don't get me started on the other used trucks I have or other people's rides that I've installed stereos and remote starters on.....

theres nobody here that really does it. well I take that back theres one guy who does it but I dont want him touching my shit.

Im gonna try it for myself and if I can do it without burning the truck to the ground, Ill hit up all my buddies to do it on their rigs. then Ill open a side business.
