Hope this hasn't been beat to death already ... I browsed a bit and didn't find anything.

I currently have a 94 4.0 4x4, rear 8.8 and front 35, geared at an absurd 3.27. I want to go 4.10, or 3.73

Re the front axle, I've been told 3.27 and 3.55 use different carriers, and I'll need to change the carrier and pumpkin to fit them 4.10s (or 3.73s or whatever I end up with).

Any truth to that?

I suppose my best solution is hitting a junkyard and picking up a front 4.10 pumpkin with carriers and gear and call it a day?

I'm thinking of doing the same for the rear end as well ... barely more expensive (if any) than new gears.

for the front end, i think the confusion is in the true d35 vs d35/28 hybrid. somebody else should be able to cover that one. as far as im concerned, if i were putting gears in a truck and only going with 3.73's or 4.10's, i would go buy axles from a junk yard. you should be able to get an entire axle for less than the labor charges to change gears. i *think* that if you go this route, you wont have to worry about the carrier in the front end anyways, it will be getting replaced with a true d35. if you have bigger tires (32's? bigger?) you may want to think about going with a new set of gears in like a 4.56 ratio or somewhere in that range.

No, ford axles and the ford D35 do not have carrier breaks.
And Kunar, his truck is a 4.0, no hybrid diff.

HP D35 TTBs do not have a carrier break, they all use the "hi-ratio" 3.55up carrier, regardless of ratio.

Junkyard carriers are your best option for 3.73s or 4.10s (4.10 D35s are a bit rare however, only some '90-'92 4cyl & 2.9L auto trucks had 'em).

Whoa! Crazy fast response! Awesome!
So you guys are saying I could just go and pick up 4.10 gears, pop 'em in and call it a day? That's great news, should save me a few bucks ...

Who told you that you needed a bigger pumpkin? I am assuming you mean the housing it all fits in?

The D35 as no carrier break, the 8.8 on the other hand does have a carrier break of 3.55:1

buy a 8.8 rear and a d35 front and make shure both are complete drum to drum and hub to hub. this way you have spare everything (hubs, axles, brake parts).it is much easier to install new u-joints, brakes, hubs, fluid, and bearings to axles that are sitting on a work bench, not to mention you can slowly build them as the cash comes available. since you reffered to changing gears as "popping them in" i assume you have no clue what goes into installing gears so i highly recommend you do not attempt to swap the gears yourself.

Thanks for the concern, I'll admit I'm not looking forward to adjusting backlash, but overall there shouldn't be any issue. And if there was, I have several friends who can drop by and work for beer. :derisive:

Jspafford, it's the same guy who told me I needed a new carrier because I had 3.27 gears ... considering this guy runs a diff shop and offered me a complete diff, I'm thinking he just wanted to make an extra buck on my back. How nice.:nono:

Yeah, there's no carrier break on the 8.8 either.

Backlash, pinion depth, preload on all the bearings... it's extremely important that it's all correct, and many special tools are needed for it. If you got the tools (AND some experience (or at least, a LOT of patience)), then go for it. Doing your own gears can be a rewarding experience if you know how to do it :icon_thumby:
