I'm new to the forum, just bought this truck and am going to need to replace the clutch soon. I will be doing the work myself for $ reasons as I have more time than money right now. The clutch is not slipping but grabs at the very top of the pedal travel and looking through the inspection hole, the disc looks quite thin. From what I have read here and review of the Haynes manual, this looks like a job I only want to do once. I would hate to buy inferior parts and have to take the whole thing back apart due to bad parts. Does anyone have any brands (Luk, Sachs, etc.) that they have had good luck with or any to definitely stay away from? It appears from checking around that a clutch kit with cover, disk, TO bearing, pilot tool and pilot bushing run between $2-300. The slave cylinder (probably smart to replace?) adds another $50-100. Parts will probably be $250+ so not cheap but would rather spend more on good brands to hedge my bet to ensure removing the transmission only once. Thanks in advance for your help.

Just purchase the store brand clutch kit and hold off on the slave if it is external.. The internal ones that need the tranny dropped to install are such a pain that they need to be replaced with a new clutch kit.

Big Jim: Thanks for the info. I'm pretty sure my truck has the slave cylinder inside the transmission bell housing. I have read some horror stories of folks installing new slaves just to have to take the whole thing back apart due to a defective part. That's why I am asking for experience by others....if they got a bad brand X slave I'll stay away from brand X. Thanks again for the help.

yes, you stock style hayes clutch will be more than sufficiant for a daily driver.

i wouldnt do anything more than that.

and if you have good peddle pressure, than just leave the slave cylinder alone. its only a 1 1/2 job to replace it when needed.
