I am thinking about pulling one from the junkyard and having it rebuild then swap it for the one in my ranger. Can anyone give me a price range for rebuilding it? I know I can get the core engine for 150.

It honestly depends on what's wrong with it, the more wrong, the more that's going to need replace or the more machine work that the shop has to do.

If it's an engine you are assembling, best to take what you have in and have them look it over and they can give you an estimate from there.

Lots of machine shops will price match rebuild kits if you can find one cheaper, and it's better to have them order it also to make sure that all of the parts are the right ones.

2.9 l build expectations

Hey Ace,

I suggest the following:

expect to replace both the crank and cam bearings (very prudent since you don't know what it had been through)
-replace the water pump (prudent, worth doing with the build)
-replace the oil pump and pick up (prudent, I used melling HIperformance but stock replacement is cheaper)
-.030" over bore, pistons, rings and machine work (may or may not be needed, this can get pricey if you aren't dedicated to being frugal; also recommend using the 2.8l flats)
-if not 89T heads, get them or purchase aftermarket ($170 ea. refurbs)
-then just general tune-up stuff, plugs, wires, cap/rotor, oil, hoses and belts as necessary.

So if you do just the "prudent" stuff, I expect you can get out of it with your $150 initial and just about $200 more for a reliable engine (depending on the actual condition of the donor).
