just wondering if its common for 92 4.0L 4x4 rangers to have a 8.8 inch... i have a 81 mustang and was thinging of makin a swap

yeah its common, but you do see 4x4's with 7.5's from 92 and lower years.

i think all newer ranger 93+ 4x4's will always have 8.8's tho

fords crazy, there is no exact year or size for the drivetrain, things get placed where they shouldnt be.

thanks you guys dont know if they are the same width do you?

WRONG. My 99 3.0 4x4 has a 7.5 rear end, AND it's a super cab.

as i had said

My 3.0 has an 8.8 with 4.10s, I got into her today off the line and she put me back in the seat, not bad for an auto.

Ranger 8.8" axles are all 28 spline (except for the FX4)... An Explorer 8.8" is 31spl, stronger than a 28spl 9", and easier to find...

in 1988-89 a lot of canadian built Rangers with 2.9 engines got Non-RABS 8.8" axles
as ford had stopped producting the "incomplete vehicle" (Chassis cab Ranger) about
that time and they had surplus 8.8" axles.

Again in 1992 with the planned Ranger redesign for 1993 Ford "burned off" a lot of surplus 8.8" axles by installing them in 2.9 (4x4) supercabs

Then around 1998-ish some 4x4 supercabs were built with 8.8" rears.

the 4.0 trucks ALWAYS got 8.8" axles, what was "weird" was the non 4.0 trucks
that got them any time ford had a supply chain problem.
