i did a oilchange on my 8.8 about a month ago, last week it started making this light howling noise when im on the throttle. from about 25mph+ and up.

i put 4.56 gears in the 8.8 5months ago and i never heard a noise from it till i did this last oilchange. now before i say what oil i used i wanna find out what you guys use for rear gear oil??? any additives or anything?

help it sounds like its going to explode

I persoanlly use AMSOIL 75-90. Pull your cover off and check it out the gears and bearings.

I think I used a name brand 90-120W oil from A-Zone (don't exactly remember). I did my gear change about 1.75 years ago.

I would check the wear pattern on your R&P for feathering or uneven load distribution. The howling suggests metal vibration, and could just even be an untightened nut or a worn wobbly bearing like Hahns said.

not down playing the noise, but...

i had a tranny shop put gears in my mustang years ago. and against his recommendation i went through a mail order catalog and got cheaper gears. and like he told me they started to whine after about 9000 miles. i paid him to verify everything was still good. and it was. he said deal with it or pay to have "better" gears put in. he said its not uncommon. i put about 50000 on it before i sold it with that same whine..

it was not really bad. but you could hear it.

check it out completely. before just assuming.

I'm using plain ol' 85W140 gear oil in mine (Sta-Lube brand or something like that), nothing fancy. 11,000 miles so far and no issues (5.13 Yukon gears, Explorer 8.8).

(been using the same stuff in my Ranger too for the last 75,000)
