I want to know if a rear sump pan on a 5.0L(From a 1989 Bronco) will fit in a 83 Ranger 4x4. I have mesured and i think it won't fit. I know that a dual sump pan will fit but i already have the rear sump pan.......... Anybody have an idea

Ok i have try to put the engine in but the oil pan contact with the bracket for the right traction beam on the crossmember.......so tomorow i will try to put 1 inch spacer between the 1/4 steel plate of my support and the engine block(seen on www.mercuranger.com). Hope that i will have enough clearence under the hood for the upper intake.......

I was going to suggest that the Bronco pan (same pan as the same years trucks and vans) wasn't going to fit, but the 4wd part threw me. These pans aren't really a rear sump, more like a 3/4 mid to rear design, the sump being 3/4 the way back in position. They don't fit the 2wd's either due to this. The "Fox" platform pans are the only sure fit in a Ranger (stock pans here, the larger capacity Fox pans have issues too)

A Crown Vic/Grand Marquis pan is a perfect match. They are plentiful and cheap. I bought mine for $40. Just make sure you get the proper dipstick and oil pump pickup.

Anybody know if there is a difference between the oil pan on a 5.0L Crown vic. and a 5.0l from a stang.

No difference, same pan for both. The "dual sump" Fox platform pan was used in all Ford, Merc and Lincoln cars starting in 1980, with the exception of the last 1975-1980 style Granadas, Monarchs & Lincoln Versailles. The 351W pan for these cars is the "keeper", this pan is nearly impossible to find in a junkyard. Ford Racing sells it in their swap pan lineup.

Would it be possible to modify a front sump '79 from a F-150 to a rear sump? If I cut the flange off, rotate it 180, and weld it back up, would it clear?

This sounds like a lot of work. Considering that the "dual sump" pans are cheap and plentiful in boneyards.

no kidding paid $30 for mine w/ pickup, was hanging on a fence

Listen to 'em

You'd be wise to listen to these guys they are not steering you wrong! The "dual sump" Fox platform pan from a 'Stang, or Crown Vic/Grand Marquis is the way to go.
I originally attempted to use a rear sump from an E-150, but the r-side I-beam would have hit the pan if I ever bottomed the suspension. That would not have made me happy! My fellow posters tried to tell me that it wouldn't work, but I had to see for myself. -- They were right! For $30.00, I could have saved myself the headache.
I did modify it, though. I wanted the low oil level sensor AND the option of mounting the dipstick tube in the oil pan.

It makes me happy!:D
