so my bother has a 1990 4x4 ranger stx. it is as most of you know, taller than a regular 4x4. pretty much the same as anyother ranger with a 2.9l in it, except when you go to buy shocks. all the listings in the catalogs say (exc. high rider). this is driving me nuts, i work in a parts store and i can get every brand of shock imaginable, but with out a part number or a listing for a shock that is made for the stx i can do shit! anyone had the same problem? anyone got a part number? anyone got anything? HELP!

get a shock for a 2" lift, problem solved.

Yup....

If you have access for Rancho brands, etc. They make shocks for 2.5 lift.

thanks guys. i do have access to rancho shocks so ill have to look up the part number but doesnt it just seem odd that a truck that came with a factory lift doesnt have any aftermarket support for stock susupension as far as brands like gabriel, KYB and monroe are concerned? any ways, thanks for the input TRS rocks!:yahoo:

A 1990 won't have the Highrider package on it ('88 (or maybe it was '89) was the last year it was available)

and i asked a ford parts guy and he said the shocks are the same anyway. he has 20+ years with ford parts.

the REAR shocks are the same even on "Highrider" equipped '87-89's

It is only the front shocks that are different.

The Highrider package was NOT a "lift"
It was a geometry correct leveling kit that was accomplished like a lift.

I had an 89 STX and the shocks are different from the standard Ranger 4WD. I did have AALs on the rear but that did not lift it very much in the rear. I tried Bilstein and KYB on it and they were almost fully extended at normal height. I found a brand of shock that actually differentiated between standard 4WD and High-rider shocks. That brand was Heckethorn. They were the only shocks I could find that were listed for High-rider shocks.

They were decent shocks too. I replaced the OEM shocks at around 50,000 miles and the Heckethorn shocks were replaced with around 120,000 miles on them (170,000 mile on the truck). They were better than the OEM shocks were off-road and did very well on the highway too.
