i have a 1985 ranger with the carb 2.0.. can i change the rear main seal without dropping the pan and removing the rear main cap?? how do i go about this??

dude, you have to drop the pan to replace the seal, theres no other way of doing it. you may be able to get away without pulling the main cap. but the pan has to be dropped. theres no 2 ways about it.

ok, i wasnt sure if it was possible. i know you can just remove tranny and replace rear main on a 2.3.

id like to get more then one person to tell me if its possible or not.. anyone else wanna give advise..

Take blackwidow67's advise, you need to pull the pan.

i dont think you can do that on a 2.3, ive never done it so if im wrong im wrong but ive never heard of being able to do that.

yeah, ive did it on a 2.3 turbo and a 12v cummins, i know its not a cummins but its a motor also with a 1 piece rear main seal. drill two hole is the left and right side of the seal and pull it out, then press the new one back in. its a bitch cuz of the little circle spring,, but its a way to do it without dropping the pan.

ill see what i can do..theres a much bigger chance of it leaking. the cummins i did went 20,000 miles before it started leaking again and the 2.3 i just did about 2 weeks ago is still holding up..

One peice seals didnt come out until 87 on the 2.3 liters.

my '86 TC engine had a one piece too...

I did it with the main cap in place, just stabbed a couple holes in the seal and installed a couple wood screws and pried it out with a claw hammer...
