other than either motor or transmission pull what kind of job is it to remove and replace the seal? It looks different than most i have replaced?Any helpful hints or suggestions???
It is a one piece seal.
Basically, all you do is screw two wood screws into the seal until they bottom out the turn them evenly, one then the other and the screws will pull it out. Some have said to use the screws to pry it out, I haven't tried that way.
Try this link for the installation: http://www.ford-trucks.com/article/...__30l__40l_rear_main_seal_installer_tool.html
looks like I am about to get properly educated will be pulling engine soon and replacing rear main seal.front seal in tranny, and any other seal looks bad, good ole freeze out plugs.
It is quite easy, I have done it twice, once on my 2.9 and once on my 4.0. just a careful pry out w a pointed awl, careful not to scratch the crank! aim the awl toward the block and tap until it gets a sufficient bite to pry it out, both times it came out easily for me. Then having a proper sized socket to tap it in with, use ample grease and it will tap in nicely.
