So I was under my truck today and noticed the trans oil pan was covered in engine oil. My truck (97 4wd 4.0 ohv) has been loosing oil for a while now but I haven't been able to locate where its coming from. So where would engine oil come from that would make it end up on the trans oil pan? I don't see any oil anywhere else except maybe a very very small dribble out of the driver side valve cover near the firewall, but I can see that and its not going down the back of the engine onto the trans.

It still might be valve covers or the lower intake. If it is a minor leak try putting a seal conditioning oil additive in the crank. I fixed a minor rear main seal leak on mine this year bu doing this. I will look at the brand when i get home. Beats pulling the tranny or engine...

Ever find out what brand? I'm pretty sure I have a rear main seal leak and was planning on fixing it in a couple weeks. Mine has oil right at the back of the motor on the oil pan.

sorry about that, I forgot to take a look the other day.

Anyways, here it is:
Bar's Leaks Engine Oil Stop Leak concentrate.

comes in an 11 FL. OZ bottle, you can get it at Walmart.

my leak was minor, but one bottle of that in the crank case had it buttoned up within a week or so. (about 100 miles of driving).

STP and Marvel make a similar product. it is pure petroleum based, no gunk to clog up ports. it softens the seals and makes them seal again.
