Hi, I have a 2004 Ford Ranger with a 2.3L engine. I have a few questions regarding rear differential fluid change. Firstly, is it necessary to remove the side of the transfer case in order to clean it out thoroughly or can I just drain via the drain plug and then refill. Also what is the best replacement oil to use. - Thanks in advance - Mike.

Side of the transfer case? The transfer case has nothing to do with the rear differential and is totally seperate. I think you're referring to the cover on the diff? If so, yes you have to remove it because there is no drain plug. The fluid spills out when you take the cover off. And it is a good idea to clean it out while it's off. As for fluid, any 80w-90 or 75w-90 fluid would work fine. Synthetic lasts longer and seems to make it smoother, in my experience. But it's much more expensive than conventional.
