Hi again, I have another question, hoping for some clarification.
While I'm waiting for the head to get back from the machine shop, I'm trying to do some long overdue maint, fluids etc including the rear end.
I'm trying to ID the rear-end in my 2WD, '94 Ranger 2.3 (XLT).
The tag on the diff says it's an 8.8" 3.73 gear. I can't figure out how to decode the rest... if it's limited slip or open.
What is confusing me is that the chassis sticker shows Axle type "86" which comes back as a 7.5" open diff 3.73 (referencing this post: https://www.therangerstation.com/tech/ford-ranger-rear-axles/ ).
Another chart I found shows S354B as at 8.8 3.73 NL, which I assume is "non-locker" or open? ( ref https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/602520-axle-tage-decoding-needed.html ). I can't be sure.
Can someone help me out with this conflict? I've gotten myself confused and I want to make sure I order the right fluid and gasket.

On the tag, 3 73 would have a L , 3L73

The axle code on your door tag the 86, would be R6 if it was a limited slip.

With door tag being 86 your truck came with a 7.5, with the tag on the diff, somebody switched an 8.8 into your truck at some time.

Ok I want to make sure I'm understanding you correctly, the first url chart I showed, that one is incorrect (the 7.5" part)? This is indeed, a 8.8", 3.73 open diff in your opinion?

No, somebody switched rear ends at some point in time to a 8.8, your truck came with a 7.5

Yes, 8.8, 3.73 open diff

Yes, 8.8, 3.73 open diff

Ok then, that didn't even cross my mind for some reason, that would certainly explain it. Now I have to wonder if the speedo matches or not.
Hey, thanks for your help on that, I appreciate it.

Edit:
well doa... it's still a 3.73 so yea the speedo would be fine. sometimes I'm a little slow.
