Does anyone know if I can swap out a Dana open for a Torsten LSD with the same 8.8 ring gear, 4:10 ratio and 10” brakes without an issue? I think the Dana is a 28 spline and the Torsten is a 31.

You need the whole axle.

Are you talking about swapping the carriers? If so, I don't think it will work because of the mismatched spline counts.

Welcome to TRS :)

A bit confusing, Dana differentials were used on the front of Ranger 4x4s

Rear differentials were Ford 7.5" or 8.8" on Rangers

2002 Ranger FX4 and 2003 and up FX4 level II did use Torsen limited slip 8.8" with 31 spline, and these were all 4.10 ratio

The 1993 to 2011 Rangers used same width axles and same mounts so are interchangeable, 7.5", 8.8" 28 or 31 spline, open or LSD, direct swap

Explorers used 8.8" 31 spline but different mounts than Rangers they can be adapted for use in Rangers

You want to swap the whole unit, because bearings will be an issue, 28 and 31 spline are different size axle diameters, and the axle tubes are larger, so..............

9" or 10" brakes won't matter in a swap

Yeh, I am swapping the whole axle not just the carriers.
I think you answered my question Ron, thanks
Both front and rear axles on my 2006 are Dana, shouldn’t matter that I will have a Torsten lsd rear axle and Dana open front.

just curious, what model of Dana axle is in the rear?

Not sure of the model?
Dana 8.8 with 4:10 ratio open, 10” drums

It's not a Dana, its a Ford 8.8. Ford never used a Dana axle in the rear of the rangers. Torson also isnt an actual axle. Its just a specific type of limited slip unit. So.... Your question is pretty confusing.

Says Dana on the carrier assembly; maybe previous owner swapped it out?

to us a "carrier assembly" is the removeable internal housing that holds the ring gear and differential.

Dana does make differential parts to put inside of the Ford 8.8 axle.

so we are still a bit confused.

complete Dana axle housings all have the model # cast on the ribs of the center section.

is there a plastic band on the passenger side axle tube with a model # ?

This may also help. At the top of this page there is a tab labeled "How To Tech". Click on that. Then click on the axles, gears, hubs and lockers picture. On the next page you see, click on the 3 article titles in the right-hand column that I have pictured below and you will find a wealth of information concerning your questions. Then you will be better prepared to ask whatever questions you don't find answers for.
