The fill plug is frozen and not coming out without a lot work. I already have the rear diff cover off since it was leaking. Can I fill the rear diff thru the axle vent tube?

try heating up the fill plug with a torch first.

Thanks for quick reply. There is nothing to to grab on to since it is stripped and strangely very shallow. I could prob weld on an extension but I would rather just fill thru the vent tube if possible.

You could do that. You could also remove the ABS sensor and fill it from there.

The ABS sensor is easiest if 4x4. 2wd is a little low to gt the bottle up there.

The vent tube can be removed and then take out the actual breather nipple. The tips of the gear oil bottles fit in the breather hole real easy and you can hold the bottle completely upright while squeezing out the gear oil.

I barely ever remove the fill plug anymore seeing as they always get rounded out and are already shallow. Bad design but either of the ways above work fine. Just know the amount needed.

IIRC, the plug has a 3/8 square hole.First, use a small screw driver to clean out all the crud.out of the socket. Use a ball peen hammer and peen the snot out of the face of the plug. You know you have peened enough when you have to drive the extension into the plug. Then it should back out . The peening will move the wallowed out metal back into the hole. Getting full depth is key , hence the cleaning. Peening will shock the threads too.:D
