Rear ABS Hydraulic Control Unit questoin(s)

Hi guys,

I have a 1993 Ford Ranger XLT 2.3L 5-speed manual.

The ABS light comes on only when I apply brakes. If I don't step on brake, it never comes on. New brake pads, Checked wires, no sign of broken.

I replaced the ABS sensor on the rear differential, but no help.

I have 3 questions:

1. Could this due to defective Rear ABS Hydraulic Control Unit? (even I don't see any signs of leaking and the wire connections seem fine)

2. I picked up a Hydraulic Unit from local junkyard, out of a 1994 Ford Explorer XLT, it looks almost identical to what I have. Will this fit my truck model?

3. If it not the ABS sensor, not the Hydraulic Unit, not the wiring, what else could be the problem?

Please help.

Thanks!!!

By "rare" do you mean "rare" as in uncommon and hard to come by, or do you mean "rear" as in, in the back.

I don't really mess with ABS much, but I can tell you your seach efforts on this site and google will be much more fruitful if you spelled rear correctly. I only say that because you did it three times, every instance that you used it.

If you do in fact mean the REAR ABS system, you ultimate fix is to unplug the module and take the bulb out. The system is junk, and there isn't much to be done about it except to remove it.

Any one of your 3 speed sensors could have gone bad, a tone ringn could be damaged, the module could be bad, or you could just have a short circuit that powers up that light when you hit the brakes.

Does the light go out once you've stopped?

If you let off the brakes and apply them again while still stopped, does the light come on?

Does it still come on if you unplug the brake switch and hit the brakes?

do the tires lock up at hard braking?
if not then it might just be a short circuit powering the bulb like adsm said
if they do lock up then the ABS isnt working

Sorry, my bad. I did mean "rear".

I never tried to unplug it, never really hit brakes hard either, they don't seem lock up.\

Once the light is on, it stays on. If I restart the engine without putting my foot on brake paddle, no light. It only comes on when I apply brake.

Also, can someone answer my 2nd question please:"I picked up a Hydraulic Unit from local junkyard, out of a 1994 Ford Explorer XLT, it looks almost identical to what I have. Will this fit my truck model?"

Thanks guys for helping me.

my moms 93 did the same thing. it turned to be a faulty valve, dont ask me what valve because thats all the shop told us. maybe a pressure valve. :dunno: maybe adsm could help on that one.

Doesn't the ABS light come on like that sometimes when you need brake fluid?

it should work as long as it's the same part number, which is stamped on it.

can't see the part number, it was taken from a 94 Explorer, from a junkyard.

it was taken from a 94 Explorer

That doesn't mean too much. There may be different calibrations for many different options that will make it work, or not, on your truck. You really need a part number to be sure.
