My credo
Give 'yer balls a tug. Fight me.
Yes, this is about a 2.9L. No, I'm not just going to put a 4.0L in it. Yes I understand it's easier. Yes I understand the 2.9 is a turd. This is about feasibility, not cost and time effectiveness.

...because I like banging my head against a wall. JEEZE MOM!

Ok, now that I've gotten that out of the way. Buddy of mine had an idea, and I wanted to ask around to see if anyone had done it.

Has anyone ever used one? Or heard of it?

Looking where my a/c compressor used to be, could be fun.

Those are rated for max 2.2l engine which would use 4,400 liters per minute of air at 5,000RPM normally aspirated

2.9l engine would use 5,800 liters per minute at 5,000rpm

Not sure how much boost you would get, would depend on pulley size available I guess

2.9l Rangers all use Speed density systems for air/fuel mix so you would need to find an alternative system

Thought of that after I posted. The other option is the SC12

That is the AMR blower for 1 liter kei cars, ASFAIK competent roots style.
No real successful stories I have heard on anything as large as a 2.9l

I thought later (89-92) 2.9s with CA emission ran MAF?

I couid be wrong, i usually am.

One guy here a long time ago put a turbo from a chrysler 2.2L on a 2.9. Guess it ran like hell. The wastegate stuck and it pushed like 40lbs of boost to it and cooked it.

Actually...

These days they use small turbos on little engines to boost the bottom end, perhaps it would be effective at that. Rig it up with an A/C clutch so you can shut it off and bypass it at higher rpm.

That was my exact idea, and why the Toyota SC12 is in the running. Cool little supercharger with an electric clutch on it. Looks like it would bolt right in to the slot where my a/c compressor was.

I would have to overdrive it to a pretty ridiculous degree to get it to push enough wind, but, with a switch rigged into the tach, I could have it auto engage and disengage to avoid over-revving it and shooting supercharger shrapnel into my intake. Or have the clutch stick and do exactly that.

From the math, a 1000 cc supercharger looks like what I would want to find. But these little AMR500 blowers can be had refurbished for the super cheap on fleaBay. So, figured I'd post on here to have some people shoot all kinds of holes in my idea first.

Not looking for a dragstrip mini truck here. Just want something novel that gets onto a highway a little easier. And maybe to listen to some boost whine. [emoji23] So, I'm hoping you're response is possible; it was my rationale.

Was going to do exactly that. Then I started reading on MegaSquirt kits. If I'm not mistaken, MegaSquirt sounds faster, cheaper, and easier to me.

The electronics issue is NBD to me; my career is building and repairing computers that run explosives fire control systems, sonar, neutron reactors, etc. Hell as far as my home and life is concerned, at this point if it can have an arduino hooked into it, it does.

I remember reading about those clutched blowers years ago, but I don't remember the conditions under which they kicked them in - was it low or high rpm, or maybe based on load? Did they have a means of byapassing the air flow around the blower when it was off, or didn't that matter?

From what I've read, they are a two lobe roots style, so when switched off, it doesn't seem to impede flow.

They were used in the Previa minivan on a Mad Max style controller. Guess it was for when you were late to soccer and needed to become the Road Warrior. [emoji23]

Well, back with more bad ideas today.

Mentioned this in my build thread. Eaton M45 (R52 or R53?), intercooler, blow off/bypass, water pump (lol), etc. Out the door for $60.

Worst case, eBay. Best case, use it. Anyone know of any builds out there with this blower being adapted to another engine?
