Well me and my dad are ready to go. we are picking up a ford certified rebuilt fm146 from a junkyard with a 1 year warranty for 450$. it's got all the paperwork and everything so it looks pretty solid. We decided we're going to put it in ourselves. I'd rather fix something that can be capable of doing with 2 people rather than spending 600+ dollars for someone else to do it. I've had the tranny out before with my dads friend so we have a grasp of the process but I'd like to here from you guys. Any tips you can give me? I've only done this once so tips would be much appreciated! Thanks!

The best tip I can give is post this in the transmission section.

k, well thanks for the great tip, seeing as at the time i posted there was 50 people viewing the general discussion section opposed to 5 people viewing the transmission section, i thought i could get better feedback, but thanks

Well we finally got it done, took a total of 24 hours, we just took it slow, didn't want to rush anything, cool thing is my dad got a bunch of air powered tools for the job so it's kinda fun using those haha. Works perfect so far. i'm debating, since the gas prices are so high these days, i'm thinking about selling the ranger and getting something more fuel efficient. Like a ford probe, from what i've heard they are pretty reliable but i don't know. I've put a decent amount of new parts into it, i just don't know if any one would buy it at a time like this.

4-cyl Probes are junk.

3.0 Probes are ok, just an over-grown Contour really.

Look at what it actually gets vs the cost and what the Ranger is getting. I have done the math, and in almost every case it is cheaper to keep driving the vehicle you own outright already than to buy something else.

Example: to go from an Explorer getting 17 mpg to a similar year Focus that you pay 10K for and gets 28 mpg, you need to drive the Focus for about 15 years for it to pay for itself. (No, I did not do the math right this minute, these numbers are approximate and from a project I did a few years ago).

Where you at in Wisconsin?
Dave

a 3.0 probe? i thought it was either the 2.5 v6 or the 2.0 4. in a small town named eagle, the town that got hit by the tornado last year.

not too far from me, all things considered. and i vote you keep your truck. at least you know what you have and you can work on it yourself. buying something different opens up all kids of possibilities and most of them aren't good.

strvger, that's kool, how was this past storm for you? And ya i see your point totally but i'm not getting too good of gas mileage, and without a consistant job, it's really hard paying for it. But i think i'll be able tough it out.

A similar year Explorer should be worth more than a Focus, so merely by buying the Focus and selling the Explorer you should be ahead. Darn near doubling the milage is gravy on top of that.

lots of wind and rain as usual. i'm near Duluth. see your point about the mileage. more is better with gas prices the way they are. and it's more expensive in wi beacuse of higher taxes there. always $0.10 or more less per gallon here in mn when i check prices on the wi side of the bridge. good luck to you.

Know where Eagle is, used to go horse back riding in the Kettles, beautiful country. Wife used to cross country race horses down there, 50 or 100 miles. She was (or had) a hard ass!
