In the tech section of reading codes it says you can use an analog voltmeter to read codes. Supposedly the needle sweeps tell you what code. I am wondering if I could do this with a digital multimeter?

Or should I stop being stupid and buy a cheap OBD1 code reader? I know you can run a jumper wire but would like something less.. shady.

Most digital meters do not respond fast enough to show the voltage change. It may work and it may not. In my opinion, that is the “shadiest way”.

You could use a cheap test light and let it blink the codes.

I usually just use a jumper and watch the cel light on the dash.

You can find a cheap analog meter on the internet for less than $10 if you want to do it that way.

Hm. Maybe I will just give the jump wire a shot and see what happens. Thanks

I agree, a digital meter won't respond fast enough for useable results. A non-powered test light would be better.

See what you can get an OBD1 reader for; the aggravation they save is worth it.

Found an OBD1 code reader at the Autozone down the street. $30 but I used my rewards and paid $12. Hoping to find out something useful
