Re-Gearing

I have a 4.0 94 explorer with M5OD and 3.27s. 3.27's are obnoxious for hills and towing, but on the highway with 235/75R15's I do 2250 at 70mph.
I had the same setup and hated it for everything, under 65 I got almost 2MPG better if I never used 5th and cruising 70 the mileage was crap either way. It's too damn tall.

The 2.9L is perfectly fine spinning 3K at 75 MPH. I doubt there's much, if any mileage gain to be had by regearing... However you'll add probably 2-3 MPG by simply just slowing down to 60-65 MPH.

Like was mentioned, the BII is as aerodynamic as a brick. Not really all that much you can do about it.

Yeah, and terrain will make a big difference too. I lost about 3 MPG when I move here. I moved from a fairly flat area at the southern end of the Susquehanna river valley. I now live in the northern part of the valley, which is near the Appalachians. Now I'm going up and down these stupid hills which are bigger than anything back home and considered small.

I'm hoping to get that back by going to 3.73s.
