My 2.9 is usually very very quiet in regards to the infamous valve train. The last couple of days, when I start it in the morning, it rattles for about 3-5 seconds after start up. I presume it's the hydraulic lifters getting blead out while it's sitting overnight? Should I worry about it? The only motors I've ever worked on had solid valve trains.

I remember looking in the owner's manual, and it said it was normal to tick at start-up.

if you have a cheap oil filter, there is a check valve that is supposed to prevent the oil in the engine from draining backwards overnight. cheap ass filters will allow all that oil to drain back, so it will take a few seconds to reprime everything. that may be the problem.

Good idea I'm close to needing to change oil anyway. I think it's got a Bosch on it right now which I thought had the anti-drain back valve in it. Thanks for the help guys!
