rattle/banging

hey guys, i posted this originally in the tranny forum cuz i thought it was coming from the bellhousing, but i pulled the starter and looked, everything seemed kosher. BUT, when i start the truck, makes a nasty banging noise, sounds like from bottom end. this only started when i ran outta gas the other day, had a hard time starting it. when i did finally get it started, it was banging. it stops after about 2000-2500 rpm, and i found if i drive it for a few miles, it stopped banging alltogether. but then i started it cold this morning, only to find its banging again. i figure that it stops at high rpm due to inertia and when warm from expansion. but im not sure..any ideas? dont really wanna pull the pan, but...anyone pulled the pan with motor still in the truck? thanks guys
 
If this is an automatic? I'd pull the inspection cover and ensure the torque converter-to-flexplate bolts are tight. If those are loose? You'll get all kinds of racket, and it's not something you can do a visual by just looking into the starter area.

oh yeah, sorry..no, its manual. i actually thought it was a loose starter or something...it doesnt matter if i have the clutch in or out, sound doesnt change...
