ok all I need some advice I am working on getting the parts together todo a rearend swap and get rid of my Open diff setup my question is this I currently have a 3.45 7.5 open diff rear end according to the axle code. I am looking at ither a 4.10 or 4.56 LSD what I want to find out from you folks what I should expect int he way of pulling abilityies part of my reason for changing this out is i will be pulling my new boat this spring the other reason being I am sick of the open diff. LOL If it helps I have a 93 ranger with 2.3l and M5OD

Thanks

A swap from 3.45-4.10's will definately make a difference for towing your boat. It's VERY rare to find an RBV with 4.56's as they were in my experience only available in special order fleet vehicles.

With the gear change, not only will it make it easier for you to start out with the trailer but you will be able to pull the load uphill longer before needing to downshift and your powerband will be more useable.

thanks for the info stupid question is going from the 3.45 to 4.xx going to make much of a difference for in town driving? since I have a 5speed? also this is a curioisty question more than anything (as the yard i plan to get the parts has lots of RBV) but is the 8.8" in the f150s and econolines the same as the 8.8"'s used in RBV?

Yup, taking off from lights you'll have to grab gears quicker, and you can drive around in a higher gear then you used to (or cruise at a higher RPM). The 8.8 in a fullsize is 31 spline the same as an explorer/FX4-LevelII 8.8 but they came with drum brakes and are wider then your rangers diff.

ok thanks for the info and that was curious since they were both labeled 8.8

What size are the tires on your truck?

standard 14" nothing special

P215/70R14? (I think that was stock size)

Go with the 4.10 gears. 4.56 will likely be too much gear unless you were running bigger tires. :icon_thumby:

ok thanks never really gave the tire size much thought when it came to gear ratio.

one more question and i am done being a P.I.T.A. but if I go with the 8.8 from an explorer i notice on the swap page it says it is like 1.5" wider will that make the tires set 1.5" farther out and if so how do you compensate for that to get a stock look?

thanks,
yonu

Have to adjust with the wheel off-set to move the wheel in towards the frame more but that 1.50" is total so only 3/4" per side.

yonu
