My brother in laws 1998 ranger wont start with the key. We thought it was the aftermarket alarm, so we disconnected it but still nothing.
I can get it to start by jumping it accross the relay, but the theft light stays on and the 4 ways blink for 5 miutes. THe key still wont do anything. Also as soon as u open the door and put in the key the 4 ways blink.
any ideas what 2 look for?

WOW, sounds pretty bad to me. Like an electrical malfunction. I would probably start by unhooking the battery for 10 minutes or so and then reconnecting it.

Agreed. You've got some kind of weird electrical problem going on there. Did you do anything or did anything strange happen right before this started?

Is this a factory system, or aftermarket? Does it have a PATS key? The GEM module controls most of the electrical system, and may be malfunctioning, but I'm not sure on this model. You may have to have it scanned.:)shady

It was an aftermarket alarm, and the truck just had a regular key, not the pats one with a chip. Ill look at the module u were talking about, if thats not it, it might have to go to the dealer

Shoot, I would have know that if I re-read your post.

If it is aftermarket, I don't think the GEM would be a problem. Usually, the start wire is tied into a relay, which you have found. Not knowing the type of system you have, it hard to give any advice. It is tied in to the lighting system, and I don't have a clue as to how. It possibly could be something as simple as a door switch, but I would think you would have an interior light, but maybe not. Something triggers the alarm when you open the door, so you might see if you can trace this out.

A lot of time, when they install the system, they splice into existing wires. Look around their installation and look for the same color wires that have been spliced. This might give some help. Good luck.:)shady
