my 99 ranger was

I think it's pronounced F by 4, it seems like a play on 4X4, with the F standing for Ford. Maybe I'm reading too much into it

Somebody blew out your pilot light. :D

Here's two Ford dealer videos of the new 2009 F150 FX4. They both call it "EFF EX FOUR" NOT "EF BY FOUR". Reckon the dealers would have fairly good odds of knowing the correct name for the trim packages on the vehicles they sell? :icon_confused:

yea i always thought it was 'eff ex four'!

i was wondering about whether the fx4 came with a factory lift too, and if the tires were a bit bigger!

when i picked my fx4 up it came with a tow package also, bigger rims (16 vs 15) and i thought the tires were bigger too, i think when i put them in the metric calculator they came out to 31" which seemed pretty big for a stock ranger?

265/75/16's and 15's have been optional for a long time. so have 16" rims and a tow package...you dont need an FX4 to get any of those.

as i said before, the only range that came with a lift from the factory was the high rider package on gen1's.

Dealers don't know anything :D

Well I guess that solves the pronunciation of EFF EX FOUR. What's it stand for then?

dont forget that the 02 fx4 and the 03 fx4 lvl 2 came with the option of a manual t-case(the last years with manual t case). also came with 15" alcoas and 31" bfgs.

That I don't know for certain. If I were to take a guess, i'd say it's nothing more than a catchy trim package code name that sells, similar to Chevrolet's Z71 package, and motorcycle nomenclature (GSX-R, CBR-R, YZF-R, ZX-R, etc.). "FX4" may very well, as you thought, be a catch phrase on "Ford 4x4", but FX4 just sounds better. :icon_cheers:.

I think Hyundai used to have a car that I heard most people call "Scoupe". I'm not sure on this one either, but I think it was an " S Coupe". I wouldn't wager any money on that'n though. :D

This is a very basic outline of trim levels off the top of my head. Keep in mind that specific options vary a lot.

S - The most basic Ranger ever offered. All had a 2.0 engine and 2WD.

Custom - A basic trim level that allowed some mixing of options and was available in any configuration.

XL - Originally a mid level trim package, but has been the base model since 1993. Some are very basic, some are almost as well equipped as an XLT.

XLT - The trim level for the masses. Has been a mid to high grade trim package. Usually it includes carpet and cloth seats, with power features optional. XLT Value Package trucks may have rubber floors.

Sport ('99-'00) - Available as a package for XL and XLT trim. Monochrome paint, Sport decals, and 15" wheels were standard.

Sport ('06-current) - Stand alone package with torsion bar suspension, monochrome paint, and decals.

Edge - Predecessor of the current Sport model. Includes torsion bar suspension, monochrome paint, decals, honeycomb grille, etc.

Trailhead - Predecessor of Edge. Essentially a 2WD XL with a torsion bar suspension, CD player, cloth bench seat, and aluminum wheels.

STX - originally a high end "sporty" trim that was discontinued after 1997. Brought back as an entry level sporty package in 2005, then discontinued again after 2007.

STX High Rider / Sport Rider - STX package with unique suspension components and mild factory lift.

FX4 - Off road package introduced in 2002. Split into the FX4 and FX4 Level II packages in 2003. Can include a manual transfer case (some years), unique seat cloth, Alcoa wheels, Torsen LS, Bilstein shocks, chrome tow hooks, and other parts. Not all trucks will have these options.

GT - handling package with a body kit.

Splash - Introduced mid 1993 for Flareside bed trucks only. Discontinued after 1998. 1993-1997 2WD Splashes were slightly lowered from the factory. All Splashes had monochrome paint. 1998 models are very rare, but very nice. They have painted door and tailgate handles, and "Autumn Orange" metallic paint was available.

XLS - 1980s decal package essentially, usually pretty basic.

Explorer - 1980s paint and trim upgrade package that can have just about any combination of options.

Bigfoot Cruiser - STX High Rider + Bigfoot Cruiser decals. A power rear window was an option on this model only.

I probably missed a couple, but that about covers it for factory trim levels.

Aftermarket trim levels include the Thunderbolt from SLP and the Saleen Ranger.

How about my Long bed '84 Ranger? when I buy parts they ask if it's a "S" model, and I say yea. I thought a "S" model was a sport model, not a barebones 2WD model. But my truck is all decked out with EVERYTHING, even running boards and a EXPLORER trim package, and my emblem just says "Ranger".:icon_confused:
