We are changing a transmission on the Ranger. the transmission was rebuilt and when we put it in we can only get the transmission close to the engine block, it won't seat all the way (it is staying about 3 thread lengths put the guide away from the block). Does anyone know what could be stopping it or not allowing the transmission to seat properly? The drive shaft moves but the torque converter will not, if that helps

you should post engine size and transmission type to get a better response, but it sounds to me like the input shaft isn't seated all the way.

He said torque converter, and it is likely the problem. TCs drop closer to the transmission. You turn it slowly while giving a little pressure. It should drop 3 times as you turn and push. Don'y try pulling the trans toward the flex plate, it will crack the front pump

Also double check the alignment of the TC studs to the flex plate holes. I have had a handful act exactly as you describe because the studs aren't quite lined up and they are getting stuck.
