Hello. I have been one here for 3 days now and my head is about to burst so I figured I make a simple post and hope that all this stuff in my head lines up. heh.
I have an 86 ranger 2.9 Stx. It recently started slipping. One question my manual says borg 1350 transfer case, yet I thought the trans is al4d? Is this one and the same, two separate units? The a4lf is supposed to have one electric conn the 3/4 shift solonoid. The borg 1350 shows many connectors. Mine has a 3 wire and 5 wire. But I dunno if thats the case/trans or what the difference is in relation to troubleshooting my problem. Anyway. *(holding my breath) Since I got the truck I was told to use D that OD had an issue slipping 4th. I tried it once and they were correct. Since I drove in D and had no issues. Now when I take my foot off the gas slowing from 3rd in D it slips when I go to step on the gas. I usually have to stop to resume. It shifts pretty good to second then 3rd and if I keep very light accelleration it doesnt slip. I tried to get codes and got 31 evp below min. and 89 clutch converter overide failure. The fluid has been a bit over full since I got the truck, so I just left it that way. Its a bit bubbly, but fresh and pink. I'm afraid this started cause I used OD to confirm it slips in and out of 4th as I get bad gas milage. Which it does. I do leak a bit of oil, but havent had to really add trans fluid or water. A few months back tho I seemed to have an overheating issue. I say seemed cause the temp only went bout between r / m in normal. But the truck did seem hot and stalled. I had to wait an hour before driving or it would buck like crazy. That was a few months ago and havent had the issue since. I was bout 104 out that day. Sorry for the long post, Ive just spent 3 days reading bout solonoids, bands one way clutches, vss and throttle sensors, modulators. I dont know where to start. many thanks to anyone that can put this into perspective for me.

Well, since you seem to have done your homework it's time for your lesson.

The A4LD and the BW1350 are not the same unit. They are not even the same type of powertrain assembly. You have both of them. The A4LD is a transmission and the BW1350 is a transfer case. The A4LD should only have the two plugs, one with about 5 or 6 wires in it, the other with two for the VSS. The BW1350 will have either one or two plugs. One for the range sensor and another on the shift motor if it is push-button 4x4.

A transmission has multiple gears to tailor engine torque to get the best amount of power, speed, and economy out of the engine. A transfer case is for 4x4. All is does is redirect the power flow to the front wheels so you get power to all 4 in 4-hi and add another reduction gear in 4-low.

If it slips only in 4th I would say the over-drive band is in need of adjustment.

Also, overfull and cavitated trans fluid is not good for the tranny. An automatic trans runs on fluid pressure. If the trans is overfilled the fluid will cavitate which can cause low or erratic line pressure, which will cause all sorts of issues with shifting, slipping, etc.

Adjust your to an appropriate level and get your OD band adjusted, see what happens.

confirmed slippage

I did try to adjust the bands, did both of them. Test ride confirmed slippage in any gear. I can hold a gear with throttle, but as soon as I slow down it neutrals. Just for clairity, when adjusting say 2 1/2 turns. Is this revolutions on the screw? Or just counting threads or the amount of times you can move the wrench side to side under the truck. Cause in that case I didn't want to turn to far, so maby I only turned each one 1 turn. if the converter locks on and don't unlock, would that cause this issue?

Haunted

Update. I have only gotten as far as correcting the fluid level. Seems to help. But now a few days ago, and this is where I get real confused. I'm hoping someone has a better diagnosis other than she's haunted. lol
I had to drive around some baricades and used 4x4 only for maby 15 mins. After that she didnt slip on the 3-2 downshift for 3 days. Its day 4 and I did slip once but did kick in. I still have the hubs turned in but driving in 2 wheel. I guess I'm questioning if something else in the driveline would cause a slip? I still have no 4th, but havent for over a year or so since I got the truck. Does bang in reverse a little harsh. Trans mount? or ? I'm hoping someone has some expertise here, its gotten to the point where I know every slowdown and turn that she will slip in the 2 mile trek back and forth to town. Now I'm making longer successful drives after using 4x4? WTH?
