I have a situation in the works for next year. I will be doing a 6 month stay in the UK, maybe longer. I will be renting a storage unit for my belongings, and it will be big enough also to put my 94 ranger in. Are there any specifics that I would need to do to my ranger prior of it going into storage? I will be the only one who will have the keys, it won't be driven or started, etc

mtnrgr,

Yes:

-remove the battery and put it on a trickle charger.
-jack it up, put it on jack stands or cinder blocks so that the rubber is suspended.
-fill the gas tank or drain it.
-open several peppermint scented air fresheners and use desicants packs if available.
-put peppermint scented Scensi blocks in the engine bay and inside the frame.

6 months isn't too hard on them ..)

Drain the fuel! Don't fill it. Run it until it shuts of too.

Also don't leave the battery on a trickle for 6 months continuously. Better to disconnect it and plan to maybe have to replace it if it won't take a charge.

If it will be in an area near the coast where there is a lot of salt in the air, spray down the throttle linkage with WD40.

Left my car in a paid parking garage for 6 months in Groton, CT. When I came back, the throttle linkage was stuck pretty bad.

Make sure you leave the parking brake off once you get the load off the tires. The brake shoes will rust bond to the drums over time.

My 77 F250 just sat for 1.5 years in my driveway and hadnt been moved with 2 gallons of fuel in the tank and no battery.

Put a battery in it and some fresh fuel it fired right up. I wouldnt even sweat 6 months indoors. Toss some sta-bil in the tank if it makes ya feel better.

Gasoline today isn't just gasoline, it degrades quickly when sitting. I fill my tank in the fall will a heavy dose of Stabil 360, a tank that isn't full will condense moisture in a garage that's not constantly heated in sub zero temps. I also change the oil and filter before storage, anything suspended in the oil will end up as goo stuck to the bottom of the pan.

Six months isn't a big deal. Change the oil, put Sta-Bil in the gas and THEN fill it up, put an extra 5 lb of air in the tires, drive to the storage unit, and take the battery out. You want the treated gas to get to the fuel filter and injectors. You don't need to jack it up. If you don't want to take the battery out, then back it in because you will have to jump it when you get back. Back it in anyway so you have more light to put the battery in. I would do that every year to my mother's car when they went to Florida for the winter and never had an issue.

Most of my vehicles sit the majority of the year... I've only averaged 2-300 miles a year on my F150, for example. I try to keep the tanks full to prevent condensation and I leave them on a trickle charger all the time. In your case I would NOT leave it on a charger... I've had the alligator clamps corrode and fall off over the course of a couple months. I think trickle chargers are safe if you're there all the time and can watch it like I do... never would I leave one unattended for months though.

Personally I would just back it in, disconnect the battery and leave. 6 months is nothing.
