ranger refit/build thread

yeah it is just as complex but damn, that is a whole lotta' flex. and no limiting straps? what keeps the ass-end from falling out? or does it even matter if it does?

You may have to set the master back to CS without a slave... what kind of hard drives are they? Also what kind of PC are you working with?

the master was always in the master position-i didn't need to change this.
the pc is an antique-my master in it is a samsung sv1296a,dated 1999.
the one i'm trying to recover from is a maxtor d740x-6L...there is no date on it.the tower is an old mdg.

the links do.that's what locates the diff in the truck.the shocks limit downtravel in the articulation, bushing bind would limit down travel in straight down direction before it got to the end of the shocks.
the thing you need to remember with a link system like this is that the diff is not just flopping around on some springs like a typical leaf installation-there are very large solid chunks of unbending steel with tight bushings that will only let the diff move in a precise manner-it cannot go outside of these precicely controlled limits.essentially, you could call the shocks limiting straps,as they keep the diff from twisting more than 45 degrees relative to the frame, but even if they were removed it wouldn't go much further.

i am fully aware of how a 3,4, and 5 link setup work, i have had 3 vehicles with them

so what limits your diff from over-extending the shocks or over-extending/seperating from the springs (or spring in this case) is not limiting straps, but your bushings binding.......either way something needs to limit it, no matter if its 3,4,5 link, or leaves
and there is no such thing as over extending your leaves in this case

that is right-the bushings on the diff end of the links are designed to limit up/down travel.
the primary articulation limiting device is the shocks-a few degrees of articulation beyond this point link bind will occur.

i'd like to see ttb do that....copykat eat your heart out :icon_rofl:

We are going to need a bigger ramp!

So the upper links attached to the frame with bushings control the side to side and up and down with the link (pivot point) at the diff providing the articulation loading and unloading the leaf spring depending on witch side is up or down.

yup.the lower links control fore/aft loads on the ends of the diff.top link controls side loads and torque loads.

while it's theoretically possible to get a ttb to do that, the practical challenges would be daunting.

i decided to wimp out and go with the faux live axle.

so remember those fancy fenders?seems they kept getting in the way of solid objects and were being eaten by(and eating)the tires.so,off they go.

bent up some steel to frame them in,with the intention of filling in the spaces with aluminum panels formed to fit.this never happened.

about this time i was also getting on to building the headers.i wanted ones that wrapped up over the valve covers and exited out the back top of the motor.hooker didn't have any of these in their catalog.

a key reason for the headers was that with the stock exhaust manifolds,it was blowing out gaskets when i used the nitrous.i needed to free up the exhaust.

w have now reached the point where the big photo gap starts,so i'll show a short video

i'm sure most of you have already seen this, but its a good one.
no one else would even attempt this hole, even after i went through it.went through several more times taking people for rides.the cab of the truck filled up with mud to the bottom of the dash.

so what are we missing in those photos?

getting the headers finished.
paint...no more flat black
assorted action and destruction shots.
i don't remember what else.
