When my ranger is parked, and you grab a hold of either back wheel and pull on them back and fourth, you can hear a clunking noise going on, Any idea what that could be? Aint nothin to due with exhuast hittin on nothin, or spare tire loose or something with the suspension. I can also hear the noise when driving down the road and go over a bump or rough peice of road.

Its just the axles. It is play between the axle and center pin in the carrier, and between the c-clip and side gear in the cattier. It is normal for a c-clip axle.

I still thinking the clunking noise it makes aint right something must be worn out, my dads 97 ranger when you rock the tires is quiet no clunking and it same rear end as my truck his has a little play like you said but nothin like mine. My axle bearings shot would that cause the axle play? Googling some info now on rear end problems, Im not quetioning your knowledge I just dont want nothin bad happen down road that coulda been fix.

If it has a limited slip and the clutches are worn down, it will have a little more play than normal, it's really nothing to worry about.

Id still like to get it fix, its so annoying driving down the road and any bump you hit you hear the clunking noise, especially with windows down. Takes away the fun of driving the ranger when you hear that all the time

Get yourself a rebuild kit for your limited slip. SHould greatly reduce (if not eliminate) the clunking (and will restore your limited slip's grip to like new again too).
Rebuilding the clutch pack can be done in your driveway in an afternoon on the 8.8" axle (give it a day if you have a 7.5").
