Hello I'm about to purchase my first Ranger and am a little concerned with the amount of rust up front. It's a 2002 V6 XLT 4X4 with 120k on it asking $1600. Here are some photos of the rust:
That looks in the pictures to be normal scale rust and nothing to be overly concerned with. I would be more worried about how the back of the frame looks. Next to the gas tank, around the shock and spring mounts and the crossmembers. The next concern would be the engine. If it has the 4.0 and the timing chains have never been serviced, it's hard to say how long it will last before the timing chain tensioner make a mess.
that looks like a big bubble next to the cross member. I'd hit it with something sharp to see if a big chunk falls off. the rust converter is a warning that something is not right.
frame rust can be deep, what looks like well established surface rust often can be deep stuff. a few exploratory taps with a hammer is needed.
