I have a 3l 2wd 6 cylinder 92 ranger xlt. All other gears shift fine. Shifts perfect on the freeway and from park into drive. Slight kick when shifting into reverse though from park. Is this common or a sign my trans may be in bad shape?

Make sure fluid is full. You may have to drop the pan to see if the filter is all the way in it's bore. If you go that far you may as well change the fliud and filter while you are there.

Kick???

The filter inside of my oil pan?

I really do NOT understand what in the hell a "kick" is in a vehicle...
That said the first thing that would make a different FEEL when shifting to reverse would be the U-joints in the drive shaft..
So put the parking brake on and put it in neutral and crawl under her.. Then with both hands shake, twist, push and pull on the driveshaft... If ANY movement in any direction can be found, replace the U-joints!
