:headbang:hey all! need some help here. recently acquired a 89 ranger. 2WD 2.9L, ext cab. put a 4in lift on it. going to run 31s. door tag says rear end gear is a 3.45 which isn't going to cut it. looking for help on which gear to run. 3.73? 4.10?

3.73 will be better high way mileage but you wont have as much low end. 4.10s would be more low end and sacrifice some highway mileage.

I have the front and back rears that I just took out from under my 89. They have 3.73's. If you're willing to come to pa we can work something out ;)

Put the 31's on and see how bad it is first. You might be able to live with it. 4 inch lift on a 2wd? What's the point? It hurts your mileage and handling :icon_confused:

I have an 89 4x4 2.9 and a 6 inch lift with 34 inch super swampers I run 3.73 gears. Its not ideal but it gets the job done.

Kool. Always floored. What rpm are you running at 60 mph?

I have no tach. Original gears were 3.45. With 4.10 and 31" my speedometer is correct...within ~2%, checked with gps.

Thanks for the info floored. Does anyone else run 410s and 31s with the 2.9l and have a tach to show rpm at 60mph?

Pi x Diameter = Circumference
3.14 x 31" =97.34"
1 mile = 63,360"
1 m/h = 63360"/h = 63360"/60 min = 1056"/min x 60 miles = 63360"/min = 60 mile/h

fourth gear is 1 to 1
axle gear ratio is 4.1 to 1

63360/97.34 = 650.91
650.91 x 4.1 = ~2670

rpm should be ~ 2670 in fourth gear @ 60 mph
if fifth gear is .72 then 2670 x .72 = ~1922 @ 60 mph

There is going to be discrepancies such as the tire diameter isn't exactly 31' but slightly less depending on air pressure. And I may have screwed up the math :dunno:
I also don't know fifth gear ratio, I guessed.

Thanks for the info floored!

If it's a M5OD, 5th ratio is .79:1

I'd run 4.56 gears with 31s. Your mileage will be about the same as with 4.10s (and much better than with 3.73s), and you'll have much more pep since you won't be lugging the motor as much.
