Hey!
I have an '88 Ranger ext cab with a brand new(I rebuilt) 2.9 V6. My next move is and exhaust system. Just curious on different opinions on good exhaust and muffler combos that sound lound and dont get torn off 4x4ing(truck has a 3'' body lift)
Let me know!

Well, if ya want to piss the neighbors off the way ta go is a Cherry Bomb or equivalant. A good choice for sound is a Flowmaster 44. Not too expensive and sweet mello tone.

I got a 40 series on mine and it sounds real close to a 5.0.

Oh, and WELCOME TO THE INSANE WARD!

To save $ I used a 31" long 2" glasspack with a turndown. It has a deep sound that isn't to loud and isn't annoying on the highway.

With a cat I don't think a glasspack is too bad.

Without a cat they are pretty loud though.

My favorite muffler on my catless 2.8 was a turbo muffler. You could tell it was running but none of the V6 drone.

I have a Gibson cat-back on my Sport Trac. It makes a V6 sound about as good as it's going to sound.

Im a big fan of long tubes and off road h pipes. Im always pushing 'em. WIth that said, only on older motors, anything modular just sounds better with x pipe and high flow cats. FLow 40's are nice and loud, but flow 50's are more mellow. Also flowmaster has the new mufflers out that are nice and quiet til WOT then they are vacuum induced to straight through .

Recently I "improved" my cat.....it didn't get much louder at all, I was really surprised. I wouldn't recomend short glasspacks at all though for a 4 or 6 cyl.

Ive got an original 40 series flowmaster it's got a really deep tone and sounds mean at WOT.

I've had glasspacks with exits in front of the rear tire on both my 4.0 and my previous 2.9. The 2.9 didn't sound too bad, but the 4.0 sounds better since it likes lower rpms.

Glasspack, couplers, and a y pipe with two tips, ran me a total of about $45 for a whole new system from the cat back. So for the money, glasspacks are great. Just don't expect it to sound like a v8... A v6 at lower rpms can sound great though.

I went with a Flow 44 Series with a 2.25 inch pipe and it sounds awesome! Great deep grumble makes itt sound like more than a V6!!

back when my truck had a 2.9, it had the lmc truck dual resonator system on it and believe it or not i LOVED the sound. beautiful at idle, and not ricey at all. only thing was, i still had my cat. surely it'll sound different with a gutted one...
