i dont know about that truck, but the one we have is a conversion the guy ordered it that way from the dealer. ours is a 87, was a 2.9 v6, it is the extra cab short bed. we have 50's on the back of ours. we were looking at putting in a 302 in it, but the only guy we know that has ever done that around here has one it is a 83 ranger. he came to look at ours cause we were going to trade him out of his motor, he said the frame is different on ours and you cant put a 302 in ours. so i think we are going to trade him out of his whole truck and put our cab and bed on his frame. if any one can help us out with info on how to go about putting a 302 in ours with out haveing alot of issues please let me know. this guy say the frame rails are too close and there isnt enough room under the hood. we measured the wheel base of dads truck, it is 127 inches. is that the same as a regular cab long bed ranger in 83? thanks guys for your help. my email is brianrichey6@msn.com if you have some info on this.ill get pictures once we start on this truck either way and post up.

he says you cant put a 302 in an 87, but you can in an 83? it's the same truck, same frame. look around some, there's 87's out there with 302's and 351's

he said our frame is narrower than his, probably where ours is a custom ordered truck, he seems to know what he is doing, he said his truck has a 1/2 truck frame from the factory. seems like i heard some of the earlier rangers used the 1/2 ton frames before. im no ford guy, i dont know alot about them, but the ol saying is if you have a torch and a welder you can put anything in anything. this should be a nice little truck when we get done with it. ill keep reading and looking around here on the forum and see what i can come up with.

I don't know about all that frame stuff. It would be a pretty extensive project to put an F150 frame under a Ranger body. For the factory to do it, I mean. And the F150 frame isn't much bigger anyway I don't think.

Anyway, yeah, pictures. If it's a floater axle, what axle? If not, it's not a real dually anyway. It's just a toy. Which is fine. But I like things to have a purpose, not just be there for looks.


I'm sure everyone has seen the Toyota motorhomes. When those first came out the trucks were delivered with a single rear axle and an adapter and an extra set of factory wheels were added by the conversion company. When those semi-float axles started breaking and wheels coming off Toyota quietly started making really duallys and also replacing old truck axles with real full-float dually axles. A big issue is that on a dually the axle tube is longer and the bearings are further out and centered between the tires. Hanging an extra wheel outboard of your wheel moves the load off of the center of the bearing--and gives the load a lever arm to work against the axle with. I've seen those Toyota axles on Ebay occassionally, but that's why I suggested a real one-ton single axle--you get the 80" rear width that looks right and real strength--the Ranger axle is a 2,750# capacity and a 14-bolt GM is 7,500# capacity.

If it weren't for the novelty of have dual wheels on a ranger..... i would say that you need super singles!!!

the tires looked very close together to be usefull as a dually, even with 10-ply mud-bogs, mine had 1.5in to give you "squat" clearence for heavy loads.

BTW guys, I saw a stock 4banger 5spd manual SRW ranger the other day with a gooseneck hitch in it, beat that shiz!!!

Yeah, those are adapters on that Ranger. I noticed how close they were too.

well, we went ahead and traded for the 83 with the 302 already in it, nice little truck. the truck is a short bed reg cab sl i dont think we are going to try the body swap yet, i may have him talked onto swaping his bed over onto the v8 ranger. but then mom wants him to find a v6 the same size as original to go back in the 87, may do that as well. still up in the air. the 83 has a short somewhere, it drains the battery over nite. the way this guy done it is a little confusing, he has three toggle swithes going to the fuel pump, ign realy and one tot he computer, and says the key has to be on to charge. going to look into that and see if we can get it all to work off the switch some how. not real big on the fuel injection engines. it was however a factory 4 cl truck if you can give us a heads up on what we can do to get all this working off the switch wed appreciate it. brian

its not origonal dually look at the lower body lines on the rear wheel flares, those are off a full size dually there one at the local autowreckers

Bullshit flag, Never will you see 1/2 ton frame under an RBV unless its custom done at home. Maybe an imported commercial thing. Id like to be proved wrong though. I'll research it.

Edit:: I just read another post that reminded me they made the F100 and F150 rangers in 1978 + In this case there would be a 1/2 ton frame under it.

ive seen one like this too except it had about 8 ft dual antennas just behind the cab and then a smaller 4ft on the roof and one off the hood. and those handles to help u get in just in front of the ext cab window. even though it wasnt lifted
