My Ranger has the a4ld and sometimes it takes a while to engage in reverse. while looking around under it i realized that my tranny was leaking fluid from around the pan could this be the reason for it taking so long to engage in reverse?

Well, I would check the vacuum modulator on the passenger side of the tranny (little round gold thing). It has a vacuum line connected to it. Pull that line off and if there is any fluid coming out of it, then the vacuum modulator is bad and needs to be replaced (only a $15 part). However, I have also read that postponed engagement in reverse could be the symptom of a sticky governor, which, from what I have also read, you will have to pull the transfer case to replace it.
